There is a fabulous new exhibit going on at the Metropolitan Museum's Costume Institute from May 6 – August 9, 2009. The Model as Muse: Embodying Fashion is the name of the game, and photos I have seen look spectacular. Seems to me that Lucinda Chambers is one woman who loves what she does, and does what she loves. Not only is she the British Vogue Fashion Director, she has also consulted on such brands as Marni, Prada, and Jil Sander. She clearly has a sense of style that is all her own.

World famous fashion photographer Mario Testino has said of her: ''She definitely has that British thing of the unknown surprise. She likes layering. She likes flowers, roses. She likes color, and she likes a mix of things that don't necessarily go together: that constant search for what shouldn't work.''

Above is a photo taken in her London home, as well as a tapestry she designed for The Rug Company. Both are tremendous examples of this eclectic, bohemian style -- I love it!

After her work with Marni she was quoted saying ''I don't think people make it a fashion decision to buy Marni. I think it's a totally emotional decision because you fall in love with it.''

Wow. I think that's my new motto. Wouldn't it be great if this was why women buy Winifred Grace.

Yet another milestone at Winifred Grace. . .the Spring collection is finally complete and we had yet another photo shoot with the amazingly talented Gintas Zaranka! Attached are some behind the scenes photos of our gorgeous model, Bailey from Elite Chicago (she's only 15, by the way).

Viva Nanna Manning!

After being widowed in her early fifties my maternal grandmother, Nanna Manning, went to San Miguel de Allende, Mexico every summer to study painting, sculpture and jewelry design at the Institute of Art located in the heart of the village. Once my grandmother was too old to travel there on her own, my mother, brother and I made a couple of trips there with her, not for classes but just so she could savor the wonderful memories.

My junior year of college, while I was studying in Spain, Nanna Manning passed away. One of the few regrets I have in life is not flying home for her funeral. I suppose it was just too painful for me to travel all that way to bury someone I had been so close with. And maybe out of that regret has come the constant stream of inspiration I channel from her. There have been so many days when I just wished she were alive to share what I have been creating, and even collaborate.

Since her passing I had been longing to return to San Miguel, in honor of her and everything she passed on to me.

In May of 2007 my mother and I finally made our pilgrimage. I was quite anxious about the trip, worried for the rush of emotion that would flood my mother, and how hard that would be to see. I was clearly transferring all of the anxiety I had about my OWN flood of emotions on to my mother -- but I did not see this until I was 3 margaritas deep, sobbing to my Mom about how much I wished Nanny were with us.

As I am approaching my Spring line, and seeking inspiration, I felt it only appropriate to revisit the photos from my trip. These are just a few shots of some architectural details I found very pleasing. Hopefully you will too!

New York Magazine just covered a new store that opened last month in the East Village called Duo (site under construction). They carry independent labels producing such pretties as these: Sah Cavalcante's intricate, Victorian-inspired dress [This is the PERFECT dress: Casual with riding boots and tights. Super sexy bare-legged with a heel], and Angela Spencer's delicate, lightweight crocheted accessories made of vintage cotton. This collar would be cool layered with said PERFECT dress, making it even more perfect. After doing some research I discovered that Sah Cavalcante is still in school which is why there is so little of his work out in the world. Hurry up and graduate, Sah! Come on! We're waiting!

I can't believe that the holidays are over. After a 14 day whirl wind tour from Chicago to South Bend to Atlanta to New York City, we are finally back (2500 miles later). Benjamin drove the entire time, and Guffman was, as usual, the greatest passenger ever!

While in New York, we stayed in Brooklyn at my dear friend Rebecca's apartment in the Red Hook neighborhood. She was so generous to let us stay there in her absence! Thank you, Rebecca! Her place is just charming and reminded me of a French country home. If I had any extra money I would gift her one of these beautiful creations by Brooklyn based artist Tamar Mogendorff, available at Bird on Smith Street. I think they'd fit right in!

Amongst the gloomy stack of bills which awaited me today, there was a very bright light–the new issue of Elle Decor! There is a story about a couple living in the Hudson Valley (where my brother lives, and where I spent Wednesday night) and I was struck by a black and white painting on the wall in their dining room. The artist is Raymond Saa and here is some fairly recent work. I quite love the layering and repetition of shapes to create a texture and movement, which is strangely the same technique I tried in my most recent collection of jewelry. Before moving to Atlanta in 1980, I lived in Coral Gables, Florida. It was a great place to be as a child. In 1975 my mom bought me my first pair of clogs in Coconut Grove. My best friend lived just a roller skate away. Mango and avocado trees filled our back yard, and the beach was just a mile down the road. Wow. It doesn't get much better than that. Or does it?? We also had a soda delivery guy who we called Jerry the Soda Man. Jerry came to our house once a week bringing us Dr. Brown's Cream Soda, Tab, and returnable seltzer bottles along with syrups so we could make our OWN sodas. Such fun! Any time I see old seltzer bottles like these it is a trip down memory lane (available at Jayson Home and Garden).

After hours of watching politics, I return my brain to Queer Eye. Whatever happened to this show? Thom Filicia did some good work on the show, and he has definitely done much, much more since.

I thought I'd share a few out takes from my photo shoot for the latest Winifred Grace lookbook. Some of the beautiful clothes Liz found: if only my closet looked that! Gorgeous Dianka getting her hair done by Sara. And Kerri texting one of her friends while waiting in between shoots. Despite looking much older in the shots I ended up using, here she really does look her age (17!).
